Community work

Oonagh Donnelly of Graphic Communication Services coordinated and supervised a logo design project with youth participants of ‘The Seomra’. Participants were encouraged in concept development and introduced to graphic professional practice. A richness in imagination and innovation was clearly apparent in this design team. Innovative participants included Vincent Kavanagh, Roy Gilmartin, George Antia and Aisling Langan-Byrne. “We are all in one big happy sandwich” George Antia.

  1. The first stage of the project involved meeting the participants and facilitating a brainstorm about ideas for a logo for the centre. The participants provided design suggestions and concepts which were explored in great detail. This was an exercise in concept development for visual communications.

A concept decision was reached and each participant was assigned a specialist responsibility in the development of the logo. These responsibilities included typography, illustration, colour management and marketing orientated input and production management.

Graphic design tricks of the trade were then demonstrated to all participants for their own investigation and experimentation. This allowed a good introduction to the usefulness of industry standard graphic software. The participants engaged displaying ease in competence and ability. The learning combined exemplary demonstration and then freedom of experimentation for the learners. So they were given structured tips and also were facilitated in their own exploration in the manipulation of graphics software tools. Following an experimentation stage to allow for software familiarity, the participants then engaged in their assigned responsibility and were guided in accordance.
